Yorkshire Dales for Kids
The Yorkshire Dales National Park was established in 1954 and provides a beautiful, natural habitat for wildlife as well as offering plenty of activities for leisure and recreation. Set in the picturesque countryside north of Manchester, it is an area as rich in heritage, as it is in beauty. Any visitor to the Dales cannot fail to be impressed by its rugged natural scenery, quaint charm and the wealth of attractions in the area.
Outdoor activities play a large part of what is on offer for a family thinking of visiting the dales. Horse riders are catered for particularly well with over 500 miles of bridleways in the park. Yorkshire Dales Trekking Centre (Holme Farm, Malham, Skipton, North Yorkshire. BD23 4DA. Phone: 01729 830352) and Masham Riding and Trekking Centre (Dykes Hill House, Masham, Swinton, Near Ripon, North Yorkshire, HG4 4NS. Phone: 01765 689636) are just two centres that cater for family groups.
If more adventurous activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing or even paragliding are more to your taste, then the Dales is home to several companies who all offer these activities under the guidance of an experienced, qualified instructor. Try Above & Below (2 Greenstead, Newby Via Clapham, Via Lancaster, North Yorkshire, LA2 8HR. Phone: 015242 51011), Dales Ventures (Ffrancon, Thornton-in-Lonsdale, Westhouse, Near Ingleton, Lancashire, LA6 3PB. Phone: 01524 241 210. www.dalesventures.co.uk) and Low Mill Outdoor Centre (Low Mill, Askrigg, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, DL8 3HZ. Phone: 01969 650 432) as starting points for action packed activity days out.
Cycling is growing in popularity with families in the area and with the rugged beauty and quiet roads, it is easy to see why. Dales Mountain Biking (West Hagg, Fremington, Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL11 6AU, 01748 884356) offers bike hire, accessories and also great advice for a family wishing to enjoy the area using pedal power!
If you prefer more leisurely pursuits then a trip to the Dales Countryside Museum (Station Yark, Hawes, North Yorkshire, DL8 3NT, Phone: 01969 666210) is an enjoyable way to learn about the history and heritage of this area of outstanding beauty.
Families will also enjoy a day at Hesketh Farm Park (Bolton Abbey, Skipton, North Yorkshire, ND23 6HA, Phone: 01756 710 444) which not only offers the chance to feed, interact with and learn about the variety of farm animals on display, but also houses a play area, and a variety of attractions and rides designed to keep children amused.
Perhaps the jewel in the crown of the area is Fountains Abbey (Ripon, Nr Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG4 3DY. Phone: 01765 608888) which offers all year round activities for families, walks in the stunning ornamental gardens and guided tours of this 800 acre national trust owned world heritage site.
Equally impressive is Skipton Castle (Skipton, North Yorkshire, BD23 1AW, Phone: 01756 792442) a 900 year old medieval castle, which is one of the most complete and well preserved castles in the whole of the country and boasts a startling history, including withstanding a three year siege during the English civil war.
A relatively new attraction, and one which offers something different, is the Forbidden Corner (The Tupgill Park Estate, Coverham, Middleham, Leyburn, N.Yorkshire, DL8 4TJ. Phone: 01969 640638) which is a series of mazy tunnels, follies, chambers and other such surprised which has been created within a grounds of the Tupgil Park Estate. At every turn there will be decisions to be made and stunning exhibits to explore. A fantastic day out for young and old alike.
Exploration of the Yorkshire Dales many towns and villages will provide visitors with a wealth of shopping opportunities and the chance to buy something very special from an area that prides itself on having its own strong identity.
A day’s visit to the likes of Skipton, Ripon, Sedburgh, Settle and Hawes will offer a chance not only to shop, but also dine in style with a whole variety of local tea shops, café’s and restaurants all offering local and international dining experiences, at excellent prices. Highly recommended is a trip to Leyburn to visit the Little Chocolate Shop (Leyburn Business Park, Harmy Road, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, DL8 5QA. 01969 625288) which allows you to see the clever processes of how chocolates are handmade, and also purchase them afterwards!
With nearly 680 square miles of rolling countryside, hundreds of towns and villages to explore, as well as a wealth of specialist attractions, and with the lure of the “big city” just a short drive away, any family visiting the Yorkshire Dales would be ensured of having a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable time, engendering memories that would last a lifetime.
