Lively, historic, awe-inspiring, magnificent – one-word descriptions could never do justice to the Cosmopolitan Capital of the Philippines. The bustling city of Manila is home to a blend of different cultures and flavors that will simply excite the senses. With different sights to see, places to go, and tastes to relish, a trip to Metro Manila is an experience to remember and to be enjoyed with the entire family.

Metro Manila has a number of historical landmarks which it is famous for. Spending an entire day on the go will surely tire you out, especially the kids, but that would soon be forgotten when you’re caught in the spell of enthusiasm that Manila’s sights can bring.

In the heart of Metro Manila is the “walled city”, Intramuros (Bonifacio Dr. & Padre Burgos St.; Phone: 527-3084). It was constructed during the Spanish colonization and is filled with European-styled buildings and churches. It is home to the grand Manila Cathedral (Cabildo Street Corner Beaterio Street; Phone: 527-1796) and San Agustin Church (Real Street Corner General Luna Street; Phone: 527-4061), the oldest stone church in the Metro. The entrance to the preserved medieval city at the northwest tip is the Fort Santiago (Plaza San Luis Complex Corner General Luna and Real Streets; Phone: 527-1572) which is one of the oldest strongholds in Intramuros. Efforts have managed to maintain the old city, and the buildings have been filled with art galleries and theaters.

Take a pleasure walk or a picnic under the shade of the trees in one of the largest parks in Southeast Asia, the Rizal Park (Taft Avenue; Phone: 302-7180). It is dedicated to the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. A monument has been built in the park where the mortal remains of the hero lies. Later in the afternoon, take your family to behold the scenic golden sunset at the world-famous Manila Bay (along Roxas Boulevard).

One could never visit Manila without stepping into the Philippine Presidential Museum (Executive House Building P.Burgos Street, Taft Avenue; Phone: 527-1215) in the Malacañang Palace (Malacañang Palace JP Laurel Street, San Miguel; Phone: 521-2307). It is one of the most historic buildings in the Philippines, and serves as the official residence of the highest chief executive of the country. A wing of the palace is open to the public, with tributes to the former Presidents of the Philippines.

A time for fun and frolic at Star City (Null Sotto Street Ccp Complex Pasay; Phone: 832-0307) is sure to fit the tastes of kids and adults alike. There are indoor rides and games that are designed for the kids to enjoy and there are also outdoor rides that are bigger and more suited for the adults. Another theme park is Enchanted Kingdom (Sta. Rosa, Laguna; Phone: 830-2111 to 16) which is a couple of hours drive from the city. It has more rides which equals to more fun for the entire family. The recently opened Manila Ocean Park (Behind Quirino Grandstand, Luneta Park; Phone: 567-7777) is also a must visit. It is a state-of-the-art oceanarium with open water marine habitat, boutique malls, and restaurants. Behold the beautiful cascading artificial waterfalls that supply the tanks of coral reefs with a vast number of species of fish and other sea life forms.

For the shopaholic, Manila is the best place to shop in the country. It has plenty of shopping malls located around the city, including SM Megamall , Glorietta, Powerplant, Greenbelt, Shangri-la Plaza Mall, and SM Mall of Asia (the third largest shopping mall in the world), to name a few. Boutiques with mid-ranged to high-end products are all located here, as well as restaurants that will thrill the taste buds.

Sample the different flavors that the restaurants in Manila can offer. There are different cuisines from all over the world, as well as famous fast-food restaurants to delight the senses. Those searching for the familiar tastes of McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King, Dairy Queen, and Baskin Robins won’t be disappointed here. For the more adventurous, sample authentic Filipino cuisine at Kamayan (523 Padre Faura St., Ermita; Phone: 521-9490). Literally meaning 'with hands', that's exactly what you can do – eat with your hands. Because the Philippines was a Spanish colony, traces of the cuisine can still be found in fusion restaurants like Zarzuela (822 Pasay Rd.; Phone: 816-7935 to 36).

Metro Manila has what every city has to offer: a pleasure dining experience, a plethora of sights, and numerous places to shop. Indeed, one can never be displeased in this city of bounty.
